This type of reaction occuring in single step through the formation of a transition state. In this reaction nucleophilic attack the carbon atom 180° away from the halog.en atom i.e. is back side this leads to the formation of a transition state with partially formed C - OH bond and partially broken C - Br bond negative charge is share by both in coming nucleophile and the leaving group.
