The formula of glucose is C6H12O6 . Calculate its molecular mass.

A

enantiomers of glucose

B

isomers of glucose that differ in configuration at carbon one (C - 1)

C

isomers of glucose that differ in configurations at carbons one and four (C - 1 and (C - 4)

D

a mixture of (D)-glucose and (L)-glucose

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

Cyclisation of the open chain structure of D-(+)-glucose has created a new stereo center at C1 which explains the existence of two cyclic forms of D-(+)-glucose, namely a- and b- These two cyclic forms are diasteromers, such diastereomers which differ only in the configuration of chiral carbon developed onherniacetal formation (it is C1 in glucose and C2 in fructosc) are called anomers and the hemiacctal carbon (CI or C2) is called the anomeric carbon.
