These are the simplest carbohydrates which can.t be hydrolysed into simple compounds. Therefore, these represents the simplest single carbohydrate unit. About 20 monosaccharide.s occur naturally. They contain up to 6 carbon atoms. These have general formula `(CH_(2)O)_(n)`. These contain Aldehydic or Ketonic group e.g. Ribose, Glucose, Fructose etc.
