Nickel Cadmium cell: It is a rechargeable cells. It has longer life than lead storage cells but more expansive than lead storage battery. Anode: Cadmium. Cathode: `NiO_(2)` act as a cathode.
Reactions:
Anode: `Cd(s) + 2OH^(-) underset("charge")overset("discharge")hArr CdO (s) + H_(2)O(l) + 2e^(-)`
Cathode: `2Ni(OH)_(3) + 2e^(-) underset("charge")overset("discharge")hArr 2Ni (OH)_(2)(s) + 2OH^(-)`
Overall reaction: `Cd(s) + 2Ni(OH)_(3)(s) underset("charge")overset("discharge")hArr CdO (s) + 2Ni (OH)_(2) + H_(2)O(l)`
Uses: 1. It is used in portable appliance.
2. It is used in cordless appliance.
Voltage: it produces a potential of about 1.4V
