Orthonitrophenol and paranitrophenol are more acidic than phenols. Give reasons.

In nitrophenols the presence of electrons withdrawing nitro group increases the acidic strength of phenol. The effect is more prenounced when such a group is present at ortho and para position w.r.t. -OH group. It is due to effective delocalistion of negative charge in plienoxide ion.
