Why acetic acid is weaker than formic acid ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Acetic acid is weaker acid than formic acid due to the presence of methyl group`(CH_3 )` group is electron releasing in nature and hence electron density increases on oxygen atom of O-H bond. It makes removal of `H^(+)` ions difficult. There is no such case in formic acid. Hence, acetic acid is less acidic than formic acid.
