Chloroacetic acid has lower `pK_(alpha)` value than acetic acid. Explain,

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The ionisation of acetic acid and chloroacetic acid is :

Chlorine atom due to its -I effect increases the ionisation of chloro acetic acid and also stabilize the chloroacetate ion by the dispersal of negative charge. In acetic acid, methyl group due to +I effect decreases the ionisation of acctic acid and also destabilises the acetato ion by intensification of negative charge. Hence Chloroacetic acid dissociates to a large extent than acetic acid.?
