Give Neil Bartlett's experiment on reactivity of Xenon.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

N. Bartlett Noticed that,
`PtF_6` react with oxygen to form ionic compound, dioxygenyl hexafluoro platinate `O_2+[PtF_6]^(-)`.
`O_2(g) + PtF_6(g) to O_2""^(+)[PtF_6]^(-)`
The first.ionization enthalpy, ofxenon have some ,similarities.
(i) The first ionization enthalpy of xenon gas (1170 KJ/mol) is fairly close to that of oxygen (1166KJ/mol)
(ii) The molecular diameter of oxygen and atomic radius of xenon are similar(4A0). Since Ionisation enthalpies of `O_2` and Xe are close to each other hence the reason is that `PtF_6` would also react with Xenon to form orange yellow solid `Xe^(+)[PtF_6]^(-)`.
`Xe + PtF_6 overset(278K)to Xe^(+) [ PtF_6]^(-)`
