Which form of sulphur shows paramagnetic...

Which form of sulphur shows paramagnetic behaviour and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Sulphur exists as `S_(8)` molecule at ordinary temperature and pressure but at elevated temperature it gets dissociated and partly exists as `S_(2)` molecule in vapour phase. In this form `S_(2)` has 2 unpaired electrons in its anti-bonding pi molecular orbitals and behave as paramagnetic materials.
