What is iodoform test ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All compounds containing the group `CH_3 - overset(O)overset(||)C-` or `CH_3 - overset(OH)overset(|)C-` (i.e. methyl carbinols, such as ethyl alcohol, propan-2-ol) when treated with halogen and aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide haloform is formed and the reaction is known as haloform reaction. If the halogen used is iodine, a yellow precipitates of iodoform are formed and the reaction is called lodoform reaction e.g.
`underset("ethanol")(CH_3 CH_2 OH) + 4I_2 + 6 NaOH rarr underset("Iodoform")(CHI_3) + HCOONa+ 5 NaI + 5H_2O`
