When 3.0 g of carbon is burnt in 8.00 g ...

When 3.0 g of carbon is burnt in 8.00 g oxygen, 11.00 g of carbon dioxide is produced. What mass of carbon dioxide will be formed when 3.00 g of carbon is burnt in 50.00 g of oxygen ? Which law of chemical combination will govern your answer ?

`C + O_(2) to CO_(2)`
Case I :
Mass of carbon = 3 g
Mass of oxygen = 8 g
`therefore` Total mass of reactants = 3 + 8 = 11 g
Mass of product (`CO_(2)`) = 11g
Hence , total mass of reactants = Total mass of product
Case II :
Mass of carbon = 3 g
Mass of oxygen = 50 g
`therefore` Total mass of reactants = 3 + 50 = 53 g
Using law of conservation of mass ,
Total mass of reactants = Total mass of product
`therefore` Total mass of product `(CO_(2)) = 53` g
