When magnesium ribbon is heated it burns in air with a white flame forming ash of magnesium oxide.
Equation :
Magnesium + oxygen `to` Magnesium Oxide
`Mg + O_2 " "to MgO` (Ash)
When magnesium oxide is mixed with water, magnesium hydroxide is formed which turns red litmus blue. This shows that magnesium oxide is basic in nature.
Equation :
Magnesium oxide + water `to` Magnesium hydroxide
`MgO +" "H_2 O to Mg(OH)_2 ` (Turns red litmus blue)
