Carbon dioxide is a good fire extinguisher as,
(i) It is heavier than oxygen and covers the fire like a blanket which cut off the contact between the fuel and oxygen.
(ii) It can be used for extinguishing fire involving electrical equipments and inflammable materials like petrol.
The supply of carbon dioxide can be obtained in following ways,
(i) It can be stored at high pressure as a liquid in cylinders.
(ii) Another way to get carbon dioxide is to release a lot of dry powder of chemicals like sodium carbonate or potassium bicarbonate. Near the fire these chemicals give off carbon dioxide.
