What is meant by acceleration due to gravity ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The acceleration acquired by a body falling freely towards the earth is called acceleration due to gravity. It is denoted by .g.. The acceleration due to gravity is described as,
Acceleration due to gravity
`= g = (G M_(e))/(R^(2))`
where `M_(e)` = Mass of earth
R = Radius of earth
Thus, .g. does not depend upon the mass of the falling object, i.e. the acceleration due to gravity is same for all the freely falling bodies.
