Wheel provides rolling friction which is smaller than the sliding friction. Sliding is replaced in most machineries, including automobile wheel, by rolling using ball-bearings/ wheels. So, wheel reduces the costs of conveyance to least. That is why, wheel is said to be one of the greatest inventions of mankind.
