Why do we need to apply more force to move a box from a rough surface than a smooth surface?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Friction is caused by the irregularities on the two surfaces in contact. On rough surfaces there are larger number of irregularities. So, the force of friction is greater on a rough surface as compared to a smooth surface. So, more force should be applied to overcome friction between box and rough surface in order to move the box.
