A mixture of HCOOH and `H_(2) C_(2) O_(4)` is heated with conc. `H_(2)SO_(4).` The gas produced is collected and on treating with KOH solution the volume of the gas decreases by `(1)/(6)th.` Calculate molar ratio of two acids in original mixture.

A

`3:1`

B

`4:1`

C

`2:1`

D

`1:2`

The correct Answer is:
B

`HCOOH overset("H_(2) SO _(4)) underset(Delta ) to H _(2) + CO , H _(2) C _(2) O _(4) overset( H _(2) S O _(4)) underset( Delta ) to H _(2) O + CO + CO _(2)`
Let a mole HCOOH and b mole of `H _(2) C _(2) O _(4)` are present in original mixture
`therefore ` Mole of CO formed =a ( from HCOOH) + b ( form `H _(2) C_(2) O _(4))`
Mole of `CO_(2)` formed= b (from `H _(2) C _(2) O _(4))`
Total mole of gass `= a + b + b = a + 2b`
`therefore CO _(2)` is absorbed by KHO and volume of reduces by `(1)/(6) therefore `Mole of `CO _(2) = (1)/(6) (a + 2b)`
`b =(1)/(6) (a + 2b) therefore a//b = 4 therefore a :b:: 4:1`
