Stability of the species `Li_2, Li_2^(-)` and `Li_2^(+)` increases in the order of

A

`Li_2^- lt Li_2^+ lt Li_2`

B

`Li_2 lt Li_2^- lt Li_2^+`

C

`Li_2^- lt Li_2 lt Li_2^+`

D

`Li_2 lt Li_2^+ lt Li_2^+`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Bond order =`1/2` (bonding electrons-antibonding electrons)

Stability `prop` Bond order, So, although bond order of both `Li_2^-` and `Li_2^+` are same but `Li_2^+` will be more stable as compared to `Li_2^-` the number of antibonding electrons are more in `Li_2^-` than that of `Li_2^+`.
