Which of the following statements are correct?
1) The N atoms are close together in `N_2` than in `N_2^(2-)`
2) It would be easier to separate the atoms in `N_2^(2-)` than in `N_2`
3) There is a triple bond between the nitrogen atoms in `N_2`.
4) There is a single bond between the nitrogen atoms in `N_2^(2-)`.

A

1, 2 and 3

B

1 and 3

C

2 and 4

D

4 only

The correct Answer is:
A

Bond order of `N_2` is 3 while bond order of `N_2^(2-)` . is 2. Hence, `N_2` has shorter bonds (closer N atoms) than `N_2^(2-)` Therefore, bond energy of `N_2^(2-)` .is smaller than `N_2` .
