A binary solid `(A^(+)B^(-))` has a zinc blende structure with `B^(-)` ions constituting the lattice and `A^(+)` ions occupying 25% tetrahedral holes. The formula of solid is:

A

AB

B

`A_(2)B`

C

`AB_(2)`

D

`AB_(4)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

No. of `B^(-)` ions in unit cell`=8xx(1)/(8)+6xx(1)/(2)=4`
Now `A^(+)` ion occupies 25% of tetrahedral holes`=(8xx25)/(100)=2`.
Thus, ratio of `B^(-)` to `A^(+)` is 2:1 or formula is `AB_(2)`.
