Why does self-incompatibility not lead to seed formation in self-incompatible species ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Self-incompatibility: In this condition fertilization does not occur in even the plants with perfect flowers, when the stigma is pollinated by pollens of the same flower. It is also known as selfsterility or intraspecific incompatibility.
Reasons for incompatibility are prevention of pollen germination, retardation of growth, deorientation of pollen tube, failure of nuclear fusion, sometimes the proteins present in the pollen wall and stigmatic surface also determine the phenomenon.
