Self-pollination. When pollen grain is transferred from anther to the stigma of a same flower is called as self-pollination. It is of different types.
(i) Autogamy. It involves the transfer of pollen grains from an anther to the stigma of the same flower. Anthers and stigma mature simultaneously i.e. homogamy. In autogamy, the flowers may be open, i.e., chasmogamous or may remain closed and never open-cleistogamous with assured seed set, some plants produce both types of flowers e.g., Viola, Commelina, Oxalis, Balsam or selfpollination in a bisexual flower occurs in bud condition before the opening of floral buds, e.g., pea, wheat, rice, etc.
(ii) Geitonogamy is a type of self-pollination in which pollens are transferred to the stigma of another flowec af the same plant, ft involves a pollinating agent like cross-pollination. Thus, geitonogamy is functionally similar to cross pollination but genetically similar to autogamy.
