Fertility of soil is very important from view point of an Agriculturist. The fertility of soil depends not only on its chemical composition but also on the quality and quantity of useful microbe present in it. Moreover, if the composition of the soil is not upto the mark and poor in fertilite materials of biological origin are added into it to improve and maintain its fertility.
These biological organisms are microbes which act as biofertilizers and lessen the burden o use of chemicals. There are microbes which act as biopesticides. If these biopesticides are applied in agricultural fields, they can reduce the burden of chemical pesticides.
Genes for resistance to various biotic stresses liave been engineered to generate transgeni plants that are resistant to insects, viruses, etc. e.g.: Bt Cotton has been made which contains gen from the bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis that encodes for the Cry proteins These crystal protein possesses the insecticidal activity against Lepidopteran, Dipteran and Coleopteran insects.
