Iodoform gives a precipitate with AgNO3....

Iodoform gives a precipitate with `AgNO_3`. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Haloforms, `CHX_3` on hydrolysis with aqueous alkali (say aq. KOH) gives salt of formic .acid and hence the name haloforms.
` CHX_3 + 4KOH (aq) overset("warm")to HCOOK + 2KY +H_2 O`
However in case of iodoform, CHI, this hydrolysis is possible even with water. This is because the C- bond is quite weak. This when iodoform is wanned with aq. `AgNO_3 `, yellow ppt. of Agl is formed.
` CHI_3 +2H_2 O overset("warm)to HCOOH + 3HI`
` HI + Ag NO_3 to underset("Yellow p pt .")(Agl)`

Chloroform contains chlorine but does not give reaction with AgNO_3 why ?

A Compound with the empirical formula Co(NH_3)_5 BrSO_4 exists in two forms : red and violet. Solution of red gives a precipitate of AgBr on addition of AgNO_3 . The violet form Sives no precipitate on the addition at AgNO_3 but gives a white precipitate on addition of BaCl_2 solution.
