All compounds containing the group `CH_3 CHOH`- (ie, methyl carbinols, such as ethyl alcohol, propan-2-ol, butanone acetophenone) wlien treated with halogen and aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide haloform (such as chloroform iodoform) is formed and the reaction is known as haloform reaction. If the halogen used is iodine, a yellow precipitates of iodoform are formed and the reaction is called iodoform reaction. For exmple,
