Rutherford.s experiment suggested that atom. has positively charged nucleus present in the centre of the atom and the electrons are present around it. As electrons have negligible mass, the entire mass of the atom was concentrated. in the riucleus. But the mass of the nucleus (calculated from the number of protons) was found to be much less than the mass of the atom. It was, therefore, thought that some neutral particles with sufficient mass must be present in the nucleus. This led Chadwick to discover neutrons in the nucleus.
