Atomic number of chlorine is 17. What will be the atomic number of chloride ion `(Cl^(-))` and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic number is given by the number of protons in the nucleus, When Cl changes into `Cl^(-)` ion, the number of electrons increases but number of protons remains the same. Hence, atomic number does not change. It remains equal to 17.
