Why does helium exist as He whereas hydrogen exists as `H_2`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Helium has a complete duplet and cannot share electron with another helium atom. Hence, it exists as He. Hydrogen has one electron in the K-shell. It can share this electron with another hydrogen to complete their duplets. Hence, it exists as `H_2`
