The given diagram represents an activity to separate a mixture of two substances X and Y:

Substances X and Y are respectively

A

sugar and common salt

B

acetone and water

C

ammonium chloride and naphthalene

D

ethyl alcohol and sodium chloride.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

When a mixture containing ammonium chloride (X) and naphthalene (Y) is mixed with ether in a boiling tube, naphthalene gets dissolved in ether whereas ammonium chloride remains insoluble which is separated by filtration. When the ether evaporates from the filtrate, the crystals of naphthalene are left behind. Common salt is insoluble in ether. Acetone and ethyl alcohol are in liquid form, so cannot be separated as residue.
