An ion `M^(3+)` contains 10 electrons and 14 neutrons. What are the atomic number and mass number of the element M? Name the element.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Number of electrons in `M^(3+)` ion = 10 Number of electrons in the neutral atom = 13` (M - 3e^(-) to M^(3+))`
For a neutral atom, number of electrons = number of protons = atomic number
` therefore ` Atomic number = 13
Mass number = Number of protons + number of neutrons = 13 + 14 = 27 The element with atomic number 13 is aluminium.
