Samples of four different oxides were taken and dissolved in water separately to form the respective oxide solution. The four solutions were then tested for their acidic/basic nature. When dissolved in water, which of the following oxides, is likely to turn blue litmus red ?

A

`SO_(2)`

B

`MgO`

C

`Fe_(2)O_(3)`

D

`CaO`

The correct Answer is:
A

Oxides of metals are basic as they form bases when dissolved in water thus, turns red litmus blue while oxides of non-metals are acidic as they form acids when dissolved in water and thus, turn blue litmus red. Thus, Mg, Fe and Ca are metals while the only non-metal is S thus, its oxide `(SO_(2))` will be acidic.
