Why is a matchstick rubbed against the rough surface of match box to light it?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The rubbing surface of a match box has powdered glass and a little red phosphorus. When the matchstick is struck against the rubbing surface, some red phosphorus gets converted into white phosphorus. This reacts with potassium chlorate in the match stick head to produce enough heat to ignite antimony trisulphide and start combustion.
