Compare the strength of wool, nylon and ...

Compare the strength of wool, nylon and cotton with the help of an activity.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Take the threads of cotton, wool and nylon of the same length and same thickness. Take an iron stand with a hook and tie one end of cotton thread with the hook. Now tie the weights on the other end of the thread. Keep increasing the weight until the thread breaks. Repeat the process with the other threads, i.e., wool and nylon. The total weight required to break the thread was maximum in nylon, followed by wool and finally by cotton. Nylon (which is a synthetic fibre) has maximum tensile strength followed by wool and cotton (which are natural fibres). Thus, order of tensile strength is, nylon > wool > cotton.
