Define rusting. What is the nature of rust formed? Give two methods by which rusting can be prevented.

Rusting is a chemical change which takes place in presence of air and moisture only. It is a reddish brown powder which is formed on the surface of iron and goes into the deeper layers.

Iron Oxygen Water Iron oxide is formed when iron objects are exposed to atmosphere. Rust formed is basic in nature. Rusting can be prevented by removing any one of the factors responsible for rusting. The most important methods to prevent rusting are :
(i) By painting the surface of iron objects
(ii) By greasing the surface of iron objects
