Why does tooth decay start when the pH of mouth is lower than 5.5?

The tooth enamel is made up of calcium phosphate which is insoluble in water .When pH in the mouth is lower than 5.5 ,it becomes moderately acidic , the dissolution of calcium phosphate starts , i.e., tooth decay begins .
