A tuning fork of frequency 250 Hz produces a beat frequency of 10 Hz when sounded with a sonometer vibrating in its fundamental frequency. When the tuning fork is filed, the beat frequency decreases. If the length of sonometer wire is 0.5 m, the speed of transverse wave is

A

260`"m s"^(-1)`

B

250`"m s"^(-1)`

C

240`"m s"^(-1)`

D

500`"m s"^(-1)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Frequency of fork = 250 Hz.
Possible frequencies of sonometer wire `= (250 pm 10)` Hz
On filing the fork, number of beats/second decreases.
`therefore` Frequency of sonometer wire, `v = 260` Hz
`therefore v = upsilon lambda = (260) (2l) = 260 xx (2 xx 0.5) = 260"m s"^(-1)`
