Assertion : The velocity of sound in hyd...

Assertion : The velocity of sound in hydrogen gas is less than the velocity of sound in oxygen gas.
Reason : The density of oxygen is more than the density of hydrogen.

A

If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

B

If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

C

If assertion is true but reason is false.

D

If both assertion and reason are false.

The correct Answer is:
D

The velocity of sound in gaseous medium is given by `v = sqrt((gamma P)/( rho))`. Clearly, the velocity of sound in a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of density of the gas. The density of oxygen is 16 times the density of hydrogen, therefore, the velocity of sound in hydrogen is four times the velocity of sound in oxygen.
