Arrange the different oxoacids of chlorine in increasing order of acidic strength?

Text Solution

The acidic strength depends upon the stability of conjugate bases. More the stability of conjugate base, stronger is the acid: The stability increase when negative charge spread upon more number of Oxygen atom.
Acidic strength : `HCIO_4 gt HCIO_3 gt HCIO_2 gt HCIO`
Reactions :
Basis : On Lowery Bronsted concept : a strong acid has a weak conjugate base and a weak acid has a strong conjugate base. These anions are stabilized by the delocalisation of charge on oxygen atoms. If the ion is stabilized to greater extent, it has lesses attraction for the proton and so will behave as weaker base (lesser tendency for the reaction to go in backward direction).
Consequently, the corresponding acid will be strong because weak conjugate base has strong acid and strong conjugate base has weak acid and vice-versa. Now the charge stabilization maximum in acid `CIO_(4)^(-)`. So `CIO_(4)^(-)` is weaker base and its corresponding conjugate acid will be strongest acid. So, acidic strength increases in the order :
` HCIO_4 gt HCIO_3 gt HCIO_2 gt HCIO`
