Why do noble gases form compounds with fluorine and oxygen ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Xenon forms largest number of compounds than any other noble gas. This is due to the reason that the Xenon has very low ionization enthalpy value. The reactivity of Xenon is due to its tendency to lose electron and the xenon confirms that the attaching atom must have high affinity for electron i.e. must be highly electronegative. Since `O_2` and `F_2` are the highly electronegative elements and have high value of electron gain enthalpy i.e. have high tendency to accept electron. That.s why Xenon forms compound with `O_2` and `F_2` only.
