Due to the comparatively weaker shielding effect of 4 f-electron in case of 5d-elements there is a greater force of attraction between nucleus and valence electrons. Hence due to greater effective nuclear charge acting on the valence electrons in case of 5d elements, : their first Ionisation energies are higher than those of 3d and 4d elements.
