Chromium is a typical hard metal while Mercury is liquid. Explain.

In chromium, the inter atomic bonding in the atom is very strong because they have unpaired electron `(4s^1 3d^5)` in the d-subshell. Therefore Cr is very hard metal. On the other hand, In mercury, the atoms have fully filled d-orbital `(6s^2 5d^10)` and the bonding in them is quite weak, therefore mercury is a liquid at room temperature.
