Explanation

Activity. Take solution of glucose or alcohol. Fix two nails on a cork, and place the cork in a 100 mL beaker. Connect the nails to a 6 volt battery through a bulb and a switch, as shown in Fig. 2.1.

Now pour some glucose or alcohol solution in the beaker and switch on the current. The bulb does not glow. It shows that glucose and alcohòl do not conduct electricity. It means, glucose and alcohol do not ionise in solution to yield `H^(+)` ions. That is why glucose and alcohol are not categorised as acids although they contain hydrogen.
