Two objects of masses 100 g and 200 g are moving along the same line and direction with velocities of `2ms^(-1)` and `1ms^(-1)` respectively. They collide and after the collision, the first object moves with a velocity of `1.67ms^(-1)`Determine the velocity of the second object.

Here, `m_1=100g=0.1` kg
`m_2=200g=0.2kg`
`u_1=2ms^(-1)`
`u_2=1ms^(-1)`
`u_1=1.67ms^(-1)`
`v_2=?`
According to the law of conservation of momentum
`m_1u_1+m_2u_2=m_1v_1=m_2v_2.`
i.e. `0.1xx2+0.2xx1=0.1xx1.67+0.2v_2`
or `0.2+0.2=0.167+0.2v_2`
or `0.4-0.167=0.2v_2`
or `0.333=0.2v_2`
`therefore" "u_2=(0.333)/(0.2)ms^(-1)`
`=1.165ms^(-1)`
