The `O-O-H` bond angle in `H_2O_2` in the gas phase is

A

`106^(@)`

B

`109^(@)28`

C

`120^(@)`

D

`94.8^(@)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

The structure of `H_(2),O_(2)` in the gaseous phase is

Hydrogen peroxide is a dihydroxy compound (H-0-0-H) and the O-O linkage is known as a peroxide linkage. It is a non-linear molecule as the two O-H bonds are in different planes. The interplanar (dihedral) angle is `111.5^(@)` in the gaseous phase, but it is reduced to `90.2^(@)` in the crystalline state because of hydrogen bonding.

The 'H-S-H' bond angle in 'H_2 S' is '92 . 2.whereas the 'H-O-H' bond angle in 'H_2 O' is '.104 .5, why?

Assertion : The O-O bond length in H_2O_2 is shorter than that of O_2F_2 Reason : H_2O_2 is an ionic compound.

Assertion : H-S-H bond angle in H_2S is closer to 90^@ but: H-O-H bond angle in H_2O is 104.5^@ . Reason : lp-lp repulsion is stronger in H_2S than in H_2O .
