Dry ice (solid CO(2)) has occasionally ...

Dry ice (solid `CO_(2)`) has occasionally been used as an explosive in mining. A hole is drilled, dry ice and a small amount of gun powder are placed in the hole, a fuse is added, and the hole is plugged. When lit, it explodes up with an immense pressure. Assume that `500.0 g` of dry ice is placed in a cavity with a volume of `0.800 L` and the ignited gun powder heats the `CO_(2)` to 700 K. What is the final pressure inside the hole?

A

416 atm

B

816 atm

C

616 atm

D

1216 atm

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

We know that 44g of `CO_(2) = 1` mol
Therefore , 500 g of `CO_(2) = (500)/(44) f 1.36` mol
Also given that `T = 700 K , V = 0.8` L . Now , using the ideal gas equation , we get `p = (nRT)/(V) = (11.36 xx 0.082 xx 700)/(0.8) = 816` atm
