Trinitrotoluene requires mild condition for the replacement of-Cl by- OH. The presence of electron withdrawing groups such as `-NO_2-CN` etc, at o-and p-positions (not at m-positions) w.r.t the halogen greatly activates the halogen towards nucleophilic displacement. Greater the number of such groups at o-and p-positions w.r,t halogen, more reactive is the haloarene.
