Why is the size of anion always larger than the parent atom?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When gaseous neutral atom takes up one or more electrons, it becomes anion. As the electron is added to outer shell, density of electrons increases. Hence, effective nuclear charge decreases. Therefore, the attraction of electrons towards the nucleus decreases. The electrons will terid to move away from nucleus and hence the size increases.
