Explain the factors which influence the stability of ionic bond.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The formation of ionic bond depends upon the following three factors:
(i) Low ionisation enthalpy
We know that in the formation of ionic bond, one of thr atoms must form a cation. Threrefore, the elements with low ionisation enthalpy have greater tendency to form ionic bonds.
(ii) High electron gain enthalpy
the other atom participating in ionic bond must form an anion. therfore, elements with high electron gain enthalpy and have tendency to form ionic bond.
(iii) High lattice eathalpy
the greater the value of lattice energy released during the formation of crystal, the stronger is the ionic bond formed.
