Give two applications of dipole moment....

Give two applications of dipole moment.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) To differntiate between polar and non-polar molecule : polar molecules are those which are having definite value of dipole moment and if value of dipole moment is zero then molecules are non-polar.
(ii) Shapes of molecules: By knowing the value of dipole moments, the shape of molecules can be find out.
(iii) Degree of polarity : if value of dipole moment of diatomic molecule is high, greater will the polarity.
(iv) distinction between cis and trans isomers: trans isomers has zero dipole moment because of symmetry and cis isomer has a net dipole moment.
