With the help of VSEPR theory, explain the shaps of `PCl_5` molecule.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Phosphorous has `(5+5)/(2)=(10)/(2)= 5` electron pair around P.
Number of atoms linked to central atom is five (5). So it has 5 bond pair and zero (0) bond pair. So it has trigonal bipyramidal shape and three chlorine atoms lines in same plane as that of P called equatorial chlorine atoms lies at right angle to this plane, called axial chlorine.
